Holiday Safety Tips
Criminals love the holidays as much as everyone else does, but mainly because it’s an opportune time for crime. Don’t let the spirit of giving lull you into giving burglars and thieves a better chance to do their dirty work.
When you leave the house:
Be extra cautious about locking all doors and windows.
Utilize your home alarm system if you have one.
Don’t leave valuables/gifts where they can be seen from outside.
If you will be leaving town, ask a trusted person to watch your home, or request a vacation watch at sandy.utah.gov/departments/police-department/patrol-division/vacation-watch.
When you leave your car:
Take all valuables out of the vehicle.
Lock all doors and secure all windows.
Try to park in well lighted spaces.
Don’t leave anything in plain sight that may entice a criminal to break into your vehicle.
When you’re out and about:
Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
Shop with friends/relatives instead of going alone.
Be cautious of your purse and or wallet. Carry them close to your body with the zippers done up.
Don’t check in at stores, restaurants, or faraway locations with social media. This lets potential criminals know when you are away from your house.
Please don’t drink and drive. If you do decide to drink, have a designated driver or find another way of getting home.
You can have your package delivered to your workplace (be sure to check with your work prior to doing this to ensure they are O.K. with it).
You can schedule your deliveries around the times you will be at home.
Install a security system, including cameras, that can capture video of a suspect taking your packages.
You can require a signature on delivery.
Get with a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member to pick the packages up from your residence if you are unable to be there.
If you do have a package stolen, please contact the Police Department to report the theft.
