I Am Sandy: Kaitlynn Stout
Kaitlynn Stout was crowned Miss Sandy at this year’s pageant held Saturday, Aug. 3. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 10, 1997. She lived in Salt Lake for a couple of years before moving to Sandy, which has since been her home. Kaitlynn is the oldest of four children and has three younger brothers. Kaitlynn has had a love for music from a young age, especially for the violin. When she was 4, she had a toy that would play the sounds of the violin when you would press certain buttons. Those sounds sparked an interest in her and made her want to learn how to create those sounds herself. She has played the violin ever since. Throughout high school, Kaitlynn was heavily involved in orchestra and earned an International Baccalaureate, a program that students can prepare for during their sophomore year and then complete in their junior and senior years. Kaitlynn graduated from Hillcrest High School in 2015 and has attended Utah Valley University ever since where she has been working on a degree in Elementary Education. She hopes to graduate with a Bachelors degree and then teach kindergarten while working towards a Masters.
Throughout her childhood, one of her favorite hobbies was competing in archery challenges throughout Utah with her dad. Her dad shot long bows and she shot recurve bows. She loved sharing this interest with her father. When Kaitlynn was 15, her dad was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), an auto-immune disease that affects the nervous system. The diagnosis made it difficult for Kaitlynn and her dad to keep shooting bows together.
MS then became her social impact initiative of choice, a part of the Miss Sandy competition where contestants raise awareness for particular causes. Every April there is a walk in Salt Lake City to raise awareness for MS and her goal is to create the largest turnout of people for the walk that they’ve ever seen.
Kaitlynn is excited to be heavily involved with Sandy City and all of the events the city puts on. Make sure to say hi to her when you see her around the city and keep an eye out for her at Sandy City events. She would love to meet and get to know all of you.
